in your life

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my website.

My name is Patty Middleton and I am a counsellor and psychotherapist providing both short- and long-term therapy to adult individuals & couples

in Nottingham or via online methods. I also provide supervision to therapists or anyone who is seeking support with their employment in person to person roles.

Hi there, I'm Patty,

I completed my MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy in 2020. Prior to this I have worked in community and residential environments. My work focusses on the impact of early experiences and their influence on how we develop disconnection from our emotions which create unhealthy behaviours. These unhealthy behaviours often erect barriers in our relationship with ourselves and those around us, which stops us being the best versions of ourselves.

As a humanistic and integrative psychotherapist I draw on different theories that I feel would be a good fit for the work that we do. Some examples of these are cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment theory, compassion focused therapy and transactional analysis. I also use theories that may help you to understand why you feel 'stuck' or approaches that will aid you in understanding why we feel we react in emotionally heightened ways and how we develop awareness of potential triggers. You may want to feel 'happier' or 'back to normal'. We can work out what this means for you so you know when you have reached your goal.

If you are a couple experiencing emotional challenges or barriers I may be able to help. Often our work will focus on why you seem to be getting stuck in conflict, as opposed to what you feel you often argue about.

I am currently completing my Diploma in Supervision with the Sherwood Institute of Psychotherapy. If you are a therapist either studying up to L4, a qualified therapist or your role requires skills similar to a counsellor I would be happy to discuss this further.

When we experience difficulties during our childhood we learn to adapt by our personality changing to survive. As an integrative psychotherapist my approach is designed to nurture these parts of our personality which which were changed.

Looking at our personality as made up of different parts help us to focus the aims of our work. For example instead of someone describing themselves as 'an angry person' we would focus on how part of you feels angry when in certain situations To understand the function of the anger, is it healthy for you or not? are you really angry about the 'here and now' or the 'there and then'.

Often we can respond to situations in our daily lives by emotionally over-reacting. If you recognise this in yourself you may actually be responding to an event from your history where you felt the response you received, didn't meet your needs. It is that unmet need that will continue to show itself until it has been authentically felt and healed.

I have worked with a rich diversity of people coming to me with a diverse range of problems. As a fully-qualified counsellor and psychotherapist I am an accredited member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), and abide by their code of ethics.

Speak in Confidence

Counselling takes place in a safe space, where you can meet with someone who will listen with sensitivity and empathy - and without judgement. In the therapy space thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence.

A problem shared...

Trouble with a relationship; anxiety or panic attacks; mood swings or depression - many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of what’s causing these problems - and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.

Make better, healthier new choices

Working together I can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, heathier choices moving forward.

What issues can counselling help with?

People come to me for help a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through counselling:
